The man was found seriously injured and unresponsive when officers responded to an incident at New Oak Estate in Carlow town after 11.40pm local time on Monday.

He was treated at the scene before being taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny, where he was pronounced dead.

A short time later, a woman was arrested in Carlow town in a follow-up operation involving the local Gardaí and the Armed Response Unit (ASU).

The scene at New Oak Estate has been cordoned off for a forensic examination and a post-mortem will be carried out to establish the man’s cause of death.
