Super Eagles braced for drastic decision as Libyan airport gate remains closed

  • Libyan authorities have refused to let the Super Eagles into the country after more than 13 hours of their arrival
  • The Nigerian national team left for Tripoli, only for their flight to be diverted to Al Abaq Airport in Al Abaq.
  • The two teams are set for a return clash in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers scheduled for Tuesday.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been stranded at Al Abaq Airport more than 13 hours after their arrival.

The chartered plane carrying the Nigerian national team was initially scheduled to land in Tripoli, but was diverted to Al Abaq.

Premium Times reports that upon their arrival at the airport, the Super Eagles and their officials were left unguarded as the players could be seen around the lounge area.

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has lamented the level of frustration, saying the team does not have access to food and wifi. He wrote on his X handle:

“I’ve been at the airport for almost 13 hours without food, no Wi-Fi or a place to sleep. Africans, we can do better.”

The NFF, in a statement, narrated how the plane carrying the team was diverted to another airport far from its scheduled destination. It reads:

“The chartered ValueJet aircraft was strangely and dangerously diverted to the small airport far from Benghazi just as the pilot was completing his approach to the Benghazi airport. We understand that Al Abraq is only used for Hajj operations.

“Weary players and officials have remained baffled as the host Libyan Football Federation did not send any reception team or even vehicles to take members of the delegation from the airport to their hotel, which is said to which is 3 hours away in Benghazi.”

The side’s captain, William Troost-Ekong, has threatened that the continued situation could lead to a boycott.

Libyan fans demand action from the authorities

Legit.ng previously reported that Libya hosts Nigeria on Day 4 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and the home fans are calling for revenge.

The country’s fans are agitated, denouncing the poor treatment of their players when they arrived in Nigeria for the first leg.

Libya captain, Faisal Al-Badri, lamented that the Nigeria Football Federation arranged shoddy transport when they traveled from Port Harcourt to Uyo for the first leg.
