Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) moved their disaster preparedness into high gear on Monday, bracing for the inclement weather expected to hit the island.

KSAMC convened a meeting of the Interagency Local Parish Disaster Committee to provide an update on emergency preparedness and response in light of the weather threat.

The meeting was attended by key stakeholders including representatives from the National Water Commission, National Works Agency, Jamaica Public Service Company, Jamaica Fire Brigade, Jamaica Urban Transit Company, National Solid Waste Management Authority and the Force of Jamaica Police.

The meeting sought to establish the level of preparedness of all agencies to ensure the safety and protection of all residents of the municipality, especially the most vulnerable, should the weather affect the island.

KSAMC Executive Director Robert Hill explained the need for the meeting which was part of discussions and consultations with partners and stakeholders in the municipality.

“This (Monday) morning’s meeting is part of our regular coordinated response where we bring together the relevant agencies to ensure the most appropriate course of action for the safety of our residents,” Hill said.

He was supported by Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby who also commented on the importance of this proactive approach taken by KSAMC.

“As usual, we must be proactive and prepared; we want to make sure our residents are prepared and up to date and listen to the advisories. I want to make sure that our agencies continue to work in partnership with each other, that public spaces and places of business are protected and that all of our residents stay safe,” said Swaby.

He noted that all the agency’s partners have implemented their respective disaster risk mechanisms, which included mobilizing their teams, clearing debris and strategically positioning equipment such as tractors and bulldozers in high-risk areas, among other efforts disaster mitigation.

Swaby pointed out that KSAMC’s Emergency Operations Center at 65 Hanover Street, Kingston – which manages all emergency shelters in Kingston and St Andrew – has also been activated.

In addition, KSAMC’s Poor Relief Department has started plans for a safe haven for people experiencing homelessness and other vulnerable groups.
