Son faces murder and home invasion charges after mother dies in Sister Lakes

A 23-year-old man faces murder and home invasion charges after his mother died Thursday in Sister Lakes, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the home around 5:15 a.m. for a report of a break and enter.

When they arrived, deputies found 55-year-old Gloria White unresponsive.

Court records show the 55-year-old woman called 911 moments before she was killed in an attempt to get help.

“During that call, you could actually hear where he went in and the attack started to happen,” Van Buren County Sheriff Dan Abbott said.

According to Abbott, a neighbor who witnessed the alleged assault came to the home and tried to stop the attack.

“Unfortunately, she sustained life-threatening injuries, but he was able to get his son away from his mother,” Abbott said.

Despite life-saving efforts, White died at the scene, deputies said.

White’s son, Aidan, ran from the scene but was later found and arrested at a nearby home, according to Abbott.

He has since been arraigned on first-degree murder and first-degree home invasion, deputies said.

Thursday’s incident was not Aidan White’s first encounter with the police, as Abbott told News Channel 3 that the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department has had several encounters with him.

“The deputies who came to assist us from Berrien said they have quite a history with him,” Abbott said.

Since his arrest, Aidan White has cooperated with investigators.

“It’s been a difficult one not only for our office, but for the family,” Abbott said. “I would ask the public to pray for everyone involved.”

Investigators were able to find two weapons that were used in the murder.

Aidan White’s bond was set at $2 million cash/surety.

During Friday’s hearing, Aidan’s defense attorney argued that he has mental health issues, prompting a status conference scheduled for Dec. 11.
