Elkhart convicted of theft, strangulation

An Elkhart man accused of burglary and other violent crimes was sentenced in court last week.

Pedro Portillo, 48, was charged with theft, strangulation, domestic assault with a prior history and intimidation following an incident in June.

It happened when Portillo allegedly entered an Elkhart home, threatening and beating his ex-fiancée.

The Goshen News says the victim told police she agreed to meet with Portillo, but when she arrived at the home around 11 a.m., he allegedly became physically violent, punching her, forcing his way in and through the home, pulling her hair, choking her and saying he was going to kill her.

Portillo was sentenced to two years in the Indiana Department of Corrections for residential entry and strangulation.

Charges of intimidation and domestic battery were dismissed.
