Resident turns home into shelter for families – who can stay ‘as long as they need’

An aspiring business owner has turned his property into a haven for families in need of a place to stay.

Marcus Makay was renovating his house to turn it into tourist accommodation near Valencia, but stopped work to offer his rooms to families in need when the floods hit.

Living on the hill in the mountains, he was largely unscathed by the floods and initially tried to help on the ground, but was unable to get into the affected towns.

Speaking further The world with Yalda Hakimhe said he offered his Facebook space after seeing devastation he “couldn’t even put into words” — and was overwhelmed by the response.

“We’ve had an amazing response from people who needed help,” said Mr Makay, who said he had 10 bedrooms and a separate flat.

A family of five – including three children – has already moved in and can stay “as long as necessary”.

Animals are also welcome on his premises, with 30 dogs on the way this weekend.

“I don’t sleep, I don’t eat, I just try to organize people and try to help them,” he added.

“And yes, it was very difficult to be honest. It was really, really hard.”
