Darius Snow references the MLB star’s World Series showing while discussing opportunities

Michigan State linebacker Darius Snow knows the importance of opportunities as well as anyone. His were rare.

The redshirt junior linebacker has suffered season-ending injuries in each of the past two seasons, each causing him to miss significant time.

It’s been a demanding road to recovery both times for the longtime Spartan linebacker, but through his availability in eight games this year, it’s safe to say his willingness to stick with it has paid off.

Snow knows the value of his opportunities. Every play he takes part in is one, as is every snap he takes.

“So, I talk to my dad every day, I talk to my dad every day,” Snow told reporters Wednesday. “And that’s the guy I always look up to. And since Coach Smith came here and I decided to come back here, every conversation I’ve had with my dad, one word has been at the forefront of every conversation. And this is: opportunity.’ For me personally, I mean, obviously, there are times when I felt like I didn’t get the amount of opportunities that I wanted for different reasons that are out of control, I mean with injuries and things like that.

“But at the end of the day, it’s never been about the amount of opportunities I have. It’s about what I do with the opportunities I have and that’s how I’ve approached this season and really every game, every practice, everything I’ve done. It’s about what I do with the opportunities I have. So when I get an opportunity to go out there and play, what do I do with that opportunity and then give it my best. And then, for me, that made me a better player, I’m able to be like a figurehead for these people.”

Snow used the New York Yankees star Aaron Judge as an example of this mentality. That, of course, was before the Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series that night.

“We (he and his dad) are talking about the World Series and it’s like, we’re talking about a guy like Aaron Judge. He’s obviously not hitting well, but he’s had an opportunity to go out there. He has an opportunity to get out. there and he gets a hit, and at the end of the game — and obviously the game got out of hand — but he gets a hit at the end of the game and that happened in the conference championship The next game, he hit a home run. So it’s about what you do with the opportunities you have, you can play great, but what do you do with this play Dad always talked about making the most of the opportunities you have and that’s what it’s all about.”
