Recruiter slams Gen Z worker after ‘bold’ application leaves him stunned

A recruiter was shocked when a young female job seeker stipulated that any role she applied for must only be a four-day work week.

Superior People Recruitment founder Graham Wynn was left with the idea that the younger generation has the right after the young woman told him why she wanted three-day weekends.

“She said she was very busy at the weekend and on Friday to organize everything for the other two days off,” he said. yahoo.

But the recruiter warned young workers to be careful about the workplace benefits they apply for.

“I think a lot of people working these days in the younger generation, it’s more about what’s in it for them rather than what they can offer the employer,” he said.

Mr Wynn said another worker he met recently proved the younger generation was only thinking of themselves as he wanted to start work at 8am rather than 7am because it was more convenient for him.

The recruitment firm’s founder said it was symptomatic of a society that never says no to the younger generation.

— If you ask your parents for something, you understand. If you get a speeding ticket, your parents pay for it,” Mr Wynn said.

“Everything is done for you, and therefore you suffer no consequences.”

Realistic Careers recruitment expert and career coach Tammie Christofis Ballis told Daily Mail Australia she wholeheartedly agrees with that sentiment.

“It’s like that participation award for trying. That doesn’t happen in the real world,” she said.

— You are in competition with others. This is what young children do not understand.

“Not all sports trophies get one. That doesn’t happen at work.

“You will not receive a participation award for attending a job interview.”

The recruiting guru believes the younger generation is looking to apply for jobs all wrong.

“They can’t walk into a business and dictate what their terms and conditions are going to be, especially if the business hasn’t advertised.”

“You have to show how you’re going to be the best person, how you’re going to add value,” she said.

“Instead of focusing on the business and asking ‘how can I solve your problems?’

“Employers hire problem solvers.”

The coach also believes there is a misunderstanding among young workers about what the four-day work week entails.

“They don’t realize you have to do all 38 or 40 hours over the four days,” she said.

Ms Tammie Christofis Ballis believes the four-day working week is a great initiative for people with training experience and if it’s right for their workplace and industry – and believes Australia will see more of it.

“I think it’s another way that companies are going to handle working from home and offer it as a benefit,” she said.

“Companies will say ‘come to the office four days a week, you’ll be here for nine-and-a-half hours, but you’ll have a three-day weekend.’

The four-day working week has been controversial, but newly released research from Swinburne University from a 2023 study found that ten companies that trialled the new working week were successful. news.com.au reported.

Bosses gave the four-day working week a 9.25 out of ten, with most employers opting to keep the new way of working.

In early October, Medibank announced it would extend its four-day working week to include 500 workers.

A six-month study at the company found that staff were happier, more efficient and even healthier.
