A Canton man has been arrested in connection with the home invasion, assault of an elderly man

CANTON (25 News now) – Canton police have arrested a man they say snuck into a home and assaulted a sleeping elderly man in September.

Police said the incident happened at a home near the intersection of West Chestnut Street and North Avenue B.

The suspect, James J. Hardesty, 48, of Canton, faces charges of home invasion and aggravated assault after he allegedly hospitalized a 63-year-old man in his home.

The victim was treated for his injuries at Graham Hospital before being transported to St. Francis of Peoria.

Hardesty was taken into custody on a warrant after detectives learned he attempted to contact the victim after he accused the victim or another resident of stealing his bike.

Police booked Hardesty at the Canton Police Department before taking him to the Fulton County Jail.

The investigation continues.
