Here’s how much money Tennessee, Arkansas will get from Kroger’s opioid lawsuits

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A $1.37 billion deal between Kroger and 30 states has been finalized.

Both Tennessee and Arkansas will receive millions of dollars from the settlement, which comes from the Kroger’s role in the opioid crisis.

Most of the money from the settlement is to be used to address an overdose epidemic linked to more than 80,000 deaths a year in the US in recent years, with most of the most recent deaths linked to illicit synthetic drugs such as fentanyl rather than prescription pain relievers.

The payments will be spread over 11 years until 2034.

Attorney General Tim Griffin announced that his state will receive up to $13.5 million.

“Opioid addiction continues to be a scourge in Arkansas and our nation,” Griffin said. “I’m pleased with this deal because the funds will go toward opioid reduction. I am grateful to the bipartisan coalition of state attorneys general who worked together on behalf of their citizens to hold Kroger accountable.”

Tennessee will receive up to $42.9 million, Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti announced.

“Today’s agreement with Kroger represents another significant step in Tennessee’s fight against the opioid epidemic,” Skrmetti said. “By holding accountable those who have contributed to this epidemic, Tennessee will secure settlement funds to address the toll opioid abuse is having on families and communities across the state.”
