Maxwell Frost, David Hogg Say Unlicensed Car Law Contributed To Orlando Mass Shooting

Rep. US Maxwell Frost sees a direct link between the new flowers in Florida transport without permit law and a Halloween shooting in his district.

During a Democratic National Committee press call, Florida Politics asked Frost about a shooting in Orlando on Friday morning that left two dead and six others hospitalized. Frost, an Orlando Democrat, noted that this is not the first time shots have been fired in downtown Orlando. He was present at a 2016 shooting nearby.

“Our police chief came out and said typically over the last few years, we’ve screened people, we’ve done security checks to make sure people aren’t bringing guns into downtown Orlando,” Frost said.

“They had to stop these screenings this year because of a law passed in Florida called carry without a permit, which makes it possible for people to conceal-carry a gun without a permit. The police department couldn’t check people because they can’t tell people they can’t have a gun in the area because technically the street is a public street.”

Video surveillance shooting released by the agency says the shooting happened around 1:07 a.m., with shots fired outside south of Washington Street on Orange Avenue. The police arrested a 17-year-old boy Jaylen Dwayne Edgar following the incident.

Frost addressed the shooting during a call to activate young voters ahead of Tuesday’s general election. Already, national Democrats were planning to discuss gun violence David Hogga survivor of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland in 2018. He was a founder of March for our lives movement, which lobbied state governments to pass more than 100 new laws across the country.

“It’s common sense that if you allow more people in these areas to have firearms that aren’t trained, which can only be in these situations, you’re going to see more random cases — random fights and things like that — that previously it would have been a fistfight, at worst, turned into a shootout,” Hogg said.

Hogg predicted the issue will also motivate people in critical statewide contests. He said he will be knocking on doors this weekend for the Florida House candidate Nate Douglas and anticipates that will help the Democrat win House Sector 37.

Frost and Hogg said many young voters feel motivated to demand change in state and federal gun policy. Both support the Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris and I think the issue will get a lot of voters to support it on Tuesday.

Frost noted that Democratic Pres Joe Biden created the first national Office to Prevent Gun Violence. He introduced a bill to ask future administrations to keep it open and was at a The ceremony at the White House with Biden and Harris when the initiative was announced.

“We have a lot of work to do. But I will tell you this, the gun violence prevention movement is the strongest it has ever been,” Frost said. “We are stronger than the gun lobby. We are stronger than ANR. We are stronger than the weapons manufacturers. We know this because we’re getting the most wins we’ve ever had. The first office to prevent gun violence, the most executive orders fighting gun violence.”

He noted that just a decade ago, many Democrats were reluctant to adopt policies like the assault weapons ban, but it has now been added to the party’s platform.

“It’s also part of our president’s current and future platform,” Frost said. “So we’re building power, maintaining power, and we’re going to keep working to save lives.”
