A pregnant woman in Arizona loses her unborn child

PHOENIX – An unborn child did not survive a weekend domestic violence incident in northern Arizona, authorities said Wednesday.

Deputies responded to a Prescott-area home Sunday and learned a man had allegedly thrown his wife to the ground, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office.

The woman, who was 6-8 weeks pregnant, suffered trauma to her abdomen but refused medical attention at the scene.

She later checked herself into a hospital and learned that the unborn child, who had shown signs of viability days earlier, had not survived, YCSO said.

Husband in domestic violence case faces multiple charges

The husband, whose name has not been released, was initially jailed for assault.

As a result of information learned during the investigation, prosecutors added a charge of attempted murder.

More charges could be filed as the domestic violence investigation continues, YCSO said.

“The Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our condolences to the woman who lost her child,” Sheriff David Rhodes said in a news release. “I am forever grateful to the men and women of the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office who are always fighting to protect the most vulnerable among us and bring violent offenders to justice.”

It’s October Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Victims can get help 24/7 by calling the national hotline at 800-799-SAFE (7233) or texting 88788.
