Pb doesn't pay, GMCH turns away state patients

Chandigarh: Taking a strong stand against the Punjab government for not compensating Rs 5 crore in outstanding dues to the hospital for services rendered under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) Mukhyamantri Sehat Bima Yojana, the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) ), Sector 32, has temporarily stopped treatment of Punjab patients under the scheme.
Upset patients from Punjab at GMCH’s ABPM-JAY counter had to return without treatment on Monday.
Last month, private hospitals and the Punjab Nursing Home Association had refused to provide cashless processing to patients, citing similar concerns about non-payment of state government dues. GMCH officials had been waiting for the outstanding amount to be cleared for the past two months.
Prof. Sudhir Garg, Medical Superintendent of GMCH-32, expressed his frustration over the situation, saying, “The Punjab government had tried for two days to clear the dues, citing some technical problem. But it has been almost two months since then. Punjab officials have held on to the payment.” He said, “Punjab had also been a defaulter earlier, and we have to face the consequences of default.”
Patients bother
“I have to undergo a knee replacement under the scheme. I had come to GMCH to get a date for the surgery. However, I had to go back from Ayushman’s counter as I was denied coverage under the scheme .The doctors informed me that if I wanted, I could have the surgery by paying for the implant. I can’t pay that amount from my own pocket, so I will wait,” said Manpreet Kaur, a patient who had informed GMCH 32.
