Here are the 29 state park projects that will be completed by the end of 2024

Michigan is home to 103 state parks, each with unique features, from towering cliffs to tumbled sand dunes to urban recreation.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is currently scrapping a massive list of 202 projects, all with a federally mandated deadline of December 2026.

The Building Michigan Together Plan, signed into law in March 2022 by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, included $250 million in federal relief program funding to help address critical infrastructure needs in our park system state

An additional $23 million was added for renovations to Belle Isle Park in Detroit, including conservancy upgrades.

This budget boost comes from American Rescue Plan Act dollars allocated during the pandemic.

The pot total now stands at $273 million in ARPA funds for the state’s parks and recreation system.

“It is unprecedented. There is no doubt. This is the largest investment in the park system, ever in the park system’s 103-year history, (by investment) at one time,” said Ron Olson, chief of the Michigan Department of Parks and Recreation Division. of Natural Resources.

Olson said the state was looking down on a 20- to 30-year backlog.

This includes everything from buildings built in the 1950s that no longer meet accessibility standards to outdated electrical systems that can’t keep up with today’s RV camping demand.

The list includes 202 projects on both peninsulas and touching all shores of the lake. Yes, even Lake Erie.

All projects must be tendered by the end of 2024 and expenditure must be completed by December 2026.
