A five-year-old boy, Suhas Gowda, drowned in an uncovered pit in Bengaluru after it filled with rainwater, sparking local protests for improved safety measures.

A tragic incident took place at Kannamangala in Mahadevapura area of ​​Bangalore on Wednesday (October 23) when a five-year-old boy, identified as Suhas Gowda, died in a drowning incident after falling into a well discovered that it had filled with rainwater. The pit, approximately five feet deep, was dug for the installation of an elevator in a new milk dairy facility, India Today reported.

The accident took place around 9 am while Suhas was playing outside his house. Recent heavy rains had transformed the pit into a hidden danger, posing a serious risk to local children. Reports indicate that the site had no safety measures, such as barriers or warning signs, to prevent accidents.

Witnesses spoke to the publication about the incident and explained that Suhas lost his footing and fell into the water-filled pit, resulting in drowning.

In response to the incident, residents of the area staged a protest, demanding immediate security measures at the site. Police later installed barriers around the pit to help prevent further accidents, the report said.

In view of Suhas’ death, the Kadugodi police have filed a first information report (FIR) against the chairman of the dairy for negligence. Investigations are ongoing to determine the specific circumstances of the incident and the absence of safety precautions, according to the publication.

This is the 12th rain-related death in Bengaluru in a matter of days. As many as eight workers have been confirmed dead in the building collapse incident at Babusapalya, while a sibling duo drowned in Kengeri Lake.

Also, a 56-year-old woman named Mallika lost her life in Sarjapur after a collision involving a mini-truck while riding her husband’s motorcycle. They were trying to navigate treacherous potholes amid heavy downpours when the accident occurred.
