Tom Hardy bids farewell to the symbiote at NYCC’s ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ panel

This lovable brain-eating, chocolate-eating symbiote known as Venom was on the loose at the Javits Center this past weekend for New York Comic Con, in anticipation of the release of Sony’s “Venom: The Last Dance” on Friday (Dec. October).

The highlight of Friday evening’s Sony Pictures Panel on the Empire Stage was “Venom 3,” one of the major projects the studio packed to share, with twisted new footage shown to the audience after the entertaining session of chat

Director Kelly Marcel and co-stars Juno Temple (Dr. Payne) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Orwell Taylor), along with star and co-writer Tom Hardy (Eddie Brock) on stage. The creepy fun started with Hardy describing what it’s been like to go the long way with this alien parasite character.

“It’s been seven years today,” the British actor told the crowd. “It’s like the day started seven years ago and now it’s night. It’s time to go to bed. I’ve loved playing Eddie and Venom and other people you don’t know. It’s been one of the best things I’ve ever done “. I’ve ever done in my life, so it will be sad to see him go.”

Hardy took on additional duties for this latest installment, which features Knull, the symbiote god, and was asked to describe his process for crafting the story alongside longtime friend director Kelly Marcel.

“Well, I have these great ideas, like literally,” Hardy joked. “I’ve had five since I started talking, and I still have them right now. What I’m going to do is talk to Kelly and I’m going to keep talking until Kelly says, ‘That’s enough.’ Then I said, ‘Yeah, she’s got it all.’ And then Kelly goes off and comes back with things I’d never even considered, but it’s all perfectly formatted, and I’m patting myself on the back.”

Being a behind-the-scenes creative partner brought a new set of challenges for the London-born actor, best known for “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

“Acting for me is a kind of mimetic art, and that’s a craft in itself,” he noted. “But storytelling is really important from a core point of view for a lot of different reasons. My opening was through the acting and behind the supposed page. I think when you have an IP or a character that’s so wonderful and so deliciously wicked like Venom, and you have such a huge talent like in my partner here, the opportunity to play and delve into the challenges you can have as an actor, against the canon and the vast amount of knowledge that is in the comics, from from Todd McFarlane to Donny (Cates) and Ryan (Stegman). You have this wonderful foundation to play, but also challenge yourself on screen. So it’s immersive and I enjoy playing the character more because I’m into the fibers of it”.

Marcel’s journey with the symbiote began years ago as the co-writer of 2018’s “Venom” and the sole writer of 2021’s “Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage.”

“We find them where we left them at the end of ‘Venom 2’,” explained Marcel about the plot. “They’ve been exposed to the outside world because of the massive fight in the cathedral. So now they’re fugitives and they’re on the run, so ‘The Last Dance’ is kind of a road trip movie like they” are chased by people from our world, but also by people from another world and the longer they stay together, the more they realize that being together puts the whole world at risk.”

This was Marcel’s first concert, and he invested a great deal of creative sweat to bring the “Venom” trilogy to a satisfying conclusion.

“I’ve been with Tom for these seven years on this journey, so these movies mean everything to us,” he adds. “I was very grateful to Sony for giving me the opportunity to see it from start to finish, especially as the last in the trilogy. It was a beautiful experience and I also hope it opens doors for female directors directed.action movies directed by men.

“This is the last Venom movie. We’ve always seen it as three pictures and wanted to tell the story of Eddie and Venom in three movies, and the Venom and Eddie arc closes here. But , as you know, there’s a lot of symbiote stories in the canon, so there’s a lot of places to go, and maybe there’s a few Easter eggs here that can start that journey.”

“Venom: The Last Dance” opens in theaters on October 25.
