NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU: First Leaked Image?

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU: First Leaked Image?

teaser

NVIDIA is currently distributing GPU samples to its board partners, indicating updates not only for the desktop market but also for its mobile line. A recently released image, along with a spec sheet from notebook maker Clevo, suggests that this may be the first image of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 notebook GPU. The image, shared by YouTube channel Moore’s Law is Dead, shows a chip labeled N22W-ES-A1, which appears to be an engineering sample. The chip design is more rectangular compared to the previous Ada AD104 model, and cross-referencing the “N22W” designation with Clevo’s next-generation laptop motherboard specifications supports the likelihood that this chip will form part of NVIDIA silicon. In addition, the motherboard design will require significant alterations due to the new pin map of the fiberglass substrate, resulting from the transition to GDDR7 memory.

The next-generation GeForce Blackwell is expected to have multiple sizes of GPU silicon, with the RTX 5080 notebook GPU likely based on the GB203 chip. This chip is expected to power the desktop RTX 5080 and potentially some models in the RTX 5070 series, such as the RTX 5070 Ti. Reports suggest that the RTX 5080 notebook GPU could feature up to 8,192 CUDA cores and a 256-bit wide GDDR7 memory interface. NVIDIA is expected to officially introduce the GeForce Blackwell generation at CES 2025, showcasing the new advancements in its GPU technology.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU: First Leaked Image?

The sample image of the N22W-ES-A1, clearly marked as an engineering unit, aligns with the naming conventions of the Clevo leak, which provided initial specs for the entire RTX 50 line. It’s expected that the Blackwell GPU series includes six variants: X11, X9, X7, X6, X4 and X2. The N22W-ES-A1 sample is likely meant for the RTX 5090 or RTX 5080 models, which are expected to use high-end GPUs, while the GB202 chip may be reserved for flagship desktop models. The leaker has mentioned the possibility of a version with 8,196 CUDA cores, which could refer to the RTX 5080 or a potential RTX 5080 Ti. There is currently no information on a Ti variant for laptops, suggesting that these specifications correspond to the standard RTX 5080. The adoption of GDDR7 memory in the new RTX 50 series of laptops is expected to improve performance , with the increase in CUDA cores potentially providing a 10% performance improvement, along with architectural updates and new technologies that NVIDIA has yet to reveal. The distribution of these samples to board partners strongly indicates a likely Q1 2025 release, aligning with NVIDIA’s typical pattern of introducing new series at CES.
