Maine grant application for offshore wind port rejected

SEARS ISLAND, Maine (WABI) – The U.S. Department of Transportation has rejected the state’s request for a large grant to help build an offshore wind port on Sears Island, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The Mills administration applied for the $456 million grant in May.

The Maine DOT commissioner told the newspaper that there was fierce competition for available funds and that the decision does not undermine the need for the port.

The state favors Sears Island for the port in part because the state owns the site.

But opponents of the decision say the port should be built at Mack Point because that area is already industrialized.
