A man bombs the Tokyo headquarters of Japan’s ruling party

A man threw several firebombs at the headquarters of JapanTokyo’s ruling party reported on public broadcaster NHK and other Japanese media on Saturday. There were no reports of injuries.

The man, who was arrested at the scene, had driven his car into a nearby fence, according to the report. The motive for the attack was not immediately clear.

Tokyo police declined to comment, saying the matter was still under investigation.

The governing party is the Liberal Democratic Party increasingly unpopular with the public because of a money scandal involving dubious financing and suspected tax evasion.

The party declined to comment on Saturday’s attack and referred all inquiries to the police.

The vote for the lower house of Parliament is set for October 27. Some tainted politicians lost the official support of the ruling party, but are running as independents.

The party recently elected a new leader, the Prime Minister Shigeru Ishibahoping to present a new image. But polls show their popularity plummeting, although it remains unclear whether they will lose majority control of the lower house in the next election given the fragmented opposition.
