Works to repair gas pipe close road in Burnley town centre

There are road closures in Burnley town center this weekend after a gas leak.

An odor of gas has been detected in a distribution pipe that runs under Royle Road at the junction where it meets the A679 (Active Road) roundabout, Cadent said.

The firm’s engineers have “made sure everything is under control” but will try to fully repair it over the weekend.

Cadent’s Nick Jerman said: “We’ve tried really hard, working with the local authority, to minimize disruption as best we can.”

He said it was a “busy traffic area” and there was “really no quiet time to do this work”.

“Our crews have already taken steps to keep everyone safe and to keep the gas flowing into the local area, but we need to fully investigate and make a repair,” he added.

Cadent crews will dig a deep excavation and then repair the pipe without having to cut off the gas.

There will be no access from Royle Road to the Active Way roundabout and motorists should expect delays.
