The case initially investigated for attempted murder involving a 22-year-old man with stab wounds has now taken a U-turn after it was revealed the wounds were self-inflicted.

The Bhandup police in Mumbai, who initially investigated a case of attempted murder involving a 22-year-old man with stab wounds, have now made a U-turn after it was revealed that the wounds were they had self-inflicted. The man suffered the injuries during an argument with his girlfriend over her refusal to share her Snapchat password.

The man’s girlfriend narrated the whole story about the incident to the police, which was later confirmed by CCTV footage from the scene.

Rizwan Shaikh, an air conditioner mechanic from Bhandup, felt insecure in his relationship with his girlfriend, whom he had been dating for a few months. He got access to her Instagram and Facebook passwords, and when he found out that she was also using Snapchat, he asked her for the password for that platform as well. However, his girlfriend refused, according to a report from The Indian Express.

The stabbing took place on Monday when Shaikh went to pick up his girlfriend from her college in Thane. Then, they went to the area near Dreams Mall near Bhandup Railway Station. It was there that Shaikh again asked for his Snapchat password. Despite his repeated appeals, his girlfriend steadfastly refused to share.

A senior police officer investigating the case told the publication, “Around 3.30 pm, Shaikh again asked the girl to share the password. As she refused, he took out a knife from her vehicle and stabbed himself in the stomach.”

After Shaikh stabbed himself, his girlfriend, visibly shaken by the incident, wrapped a handkerchief around his wound and they then went to their respective homes.

How did the attempted murder angle come about?

Police were tipped off to the point of attempted murder after Shaikh’s father, Mohamed Islam Abdul Gafar Shaikh, reported that his son had been stabbed by three unknown men after getting hold of his vehicle while returning home.

In her complaint, she explained that the incident happened while her son was going to repair an air conditioner at Gadhav Naka in Bhandup. The three individuals stabbed him and then fled the scene. After the complaint, the police filed a case of attempted murder.

“In search of clues, we started examining the CCTV footage. After checking for more than seven hours, we could not locate Shaikh near the spot,” the police officer said. “Then we got his call data records and noticed that he had never visited Gadhav Naka.”
