Julie Bowen, the talented actress behind it Modern Family Claire Dunphy recently shared her surprising doubts about her comedic skills.

“I said, ‘I can’t tell a joke, I’m not funny,'” Bowen recalled to The three questions with Andy Richter.

Despite landing a pivotal role in one of the most beloved sitcoms of this century, Bowen was initially hesitant to audition for Modern Family.

“I told my team, ‘Don’t give me this three-joke-a-page stuff,'” he revealed.

Fortunately, her managers encouraged her to take a chance, citing the success of Helen Hunt crazy about you as an example.

“I said, ‘(Helen Hunt) just won five Emmys,’” Bowen recalled, to which her handlers replied, “Yes. So it’s fun in a different way. It’s not funny with three jokes per page. And yet she’s so funny, try to be Helen Hunt.”

Bowen’s managers helped her recognize her unique comedic strength.

“You’ll notice I didn’t make too many jokes,” Bowen joked with Richter. “I fell a lot.”

He also shared his preference for drama shows like Ed.

“Ed was when drama was a thing,” he explained. “There was like Ally McBeal at the time. It was for hours with big fight scenes and then nice and warm and funny scenes. And all those things could exist at the same time.”

Additionally, Bowen revealed that she was pregnant during her Modern Family audition and thought it would hurt her chances.

“I didn’t think I’d have Modern Family because I was so pregnant,” she confessed. “I was trying out for two pilots, and I wanted Modern Family, but on the other show, the character was pregnant. And I said, ‘I have a chance on this one.’

Bowen’s candid revelations offer a refreshing insight into her journey.
