Ghanaian man returns to Ghana from US to evade child support after wife divorces him

  • Nana, a Ghanaian based in the United States, revealed that her ex-husband fled to Ghana to avoid paying child support after their divorce.
  • The marriage ended after she refused to share a joint bank account and control of their finances amid allegations of domestic violence
  • Despite the divorce nearly a decade ago, she has not seen her children since leaving the United States

Nana, a Ghanaian living in the United States, said she has been the only one taking care of her children since her divorce because her ex-husband fled to Ghana to avoid paying child support.

Nana explained that she met her ex-husband online in the early 2000s and moved to the United States to be with him. She admitted that:

“I might not have pursued the relationship if they had met earlier because it wasn’t my specification.”

In an interview with DJ Nyaami on SVTV Africa, Nana said her marriage took a turn when issues of finances and control arose.

Nana started working in the US and her husband demanded control of her income and asked for a joint bank account. As tensions grew, Nana refused to share a joint account, further straining their relationship.

“It wasn’t bad for him to keep, but I couldn’t access the money when I needed it,” Nana explained.

The situation worsened with allegations of domestic violence and disrespect in the marriage. Eventually, her husband left Nana after she decided to keep control of her finances.

After her divorce, she was legally required to provide child support. However, he fled the US and returned to Ghana, leaving his responsibilities behind. Nana has been divorced for almost ten years.
