The work of two addiction counselors has been recognized with a government award.

Christopher Webson and Helena Carvelli-Astwood of the Department of National Drug Control, who work at the Nelson Bascome Substance Abuse Treatment Facility, received the Public Service Excellence Award for September.

He recognized her leadership and collaboration in the implementation of Safety Care Crisis Intervention Techniques training, a required certification program for staff working in the facility’s residential treatment programs.

“As we continue to prioritize social investment, the dedication demonstrated by Mr Webson and Ms Carvelli-Astwood is crucial to ensuring our public servants feel safe and equipped and that the services provided by Government meet the needs of the community,” said David Burt.

The Prime Minister added: “Not only does their work improve the safety and wellbeing of their colleagues and customers, it also aligns with the Government’s wider focus on improving social services, particularly in areas such as mental health and substance abuse support.”

Head of Public Service Cherie Whitter said: “The ability of Mr Webson and Ms Carvelli-Astwood to work together during shifts, engage with their colleagues and complete this critical training speaks volumes for their leadership and their willingness to go the extra mile.

“Not only did they cover an important departmental need but they also set an example of collaboration and professionalism.

“Their work helps protect both our staff and the Government from potential risks, while fostering a culture of safety and responsibility, and I thank them for their contribution to the Government’s progress.”

The PSEA is a program that recognizes a group or individual within the Public Service who have achieved significant achievements in service delivery in the past 60 days.
