TOKYO (Kyodo) — The ruling Liberal Democratic Party is the most popular among Japanese voters ahead of the Oct. 27 general election, a Kyodo News poll showed Sunday.

In a nationwide telephone poll conducted Saturday and Sunday, 26.4 percent of respondents said they plan to vote for the LDP, led by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, in the proportional representation segment, compared with 12.4 percent who supports the main opposition, the Constitutional Democratic Party. from Japan

Facing a backlash against the slush funds amassed by intra-party factions within the LDP, the ruling party is scrambling to update its public image with Ishiba.

A separate Kyodo poll conducted a day after his inauguration earlier this month saw his approval rating at 50.7 percent, although simple comparisons cannot be made due to the use of different voting methods.

Regarding the LDP’s decision not to endorse 12 lawmakers involved in the political fund scandal as official candidates in single-member districts in the upcoming general election, 71.6% said the action was “insufficient”, while 22.1% believe it was “enough”.

A total of 50.7 percent said their preferred outcome of the election would be for the ruling and opposition parties to be evenly split, 27.1 percent would like the ruling party to be dominant and the 15.1 percent answered that they wanted the parties to be reversed in power.
