Man beaten by mob on Kolkata hospital grounds, doctors raise safety concerns

KOLKATA: In a recent incident at SSKM Hospital in Calcutta, a group of attackers assaulted a young man in the trauma care departmentleaving him injured.
This event occurred while the nearby junior doctors continued hunger strikepressing for their 10-point demands, including better security at state medical facilities.
Hospital officials reported that about 15 men beat up the youth who had come with his friends for treatment. The attackers allegedly parked their vehicles outside the hospital before entering.
A Kolkata Police officer stated that the assaulted youth was involved in an earlier clash between rival factions. “We are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the attackers.
The police have put up barriers in front of the door of the trauma care center,” he said.
The attackers also used hockey sticks, rods and steel chains to beat a relative of another patient, according to hospital sources.
This incident follows the assault on medical staff at another hospital near Kolkata by relatives of a dead patient, sparking further unrest between medical professionals to improve security.
Utsa Hazra, a young doctor, stated, “If foreigners can enter a tertiary care hospital like SSKM and beat up patients without police intervention, it just shows how hollow the administration’s claim of hospital security is.” .
The hunger strike, ongoing since October 5, began after a post-graduate guard trainee was allegedly raped and killed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. While one person was arrested, the CBI is investigating the case later Calcutta High Court order
