With the issue of drugs, alcohol and addiction a prominent part of the conversation in the Portage la Prairie area, a local group is stepping up to help those struggling with these issues.

Jonathan Pashe is co-founder of the Warriors in Recovery organization, which hosts several sober events around the area, and shares what they hope to achieve with their efforts.

“Yes, we are Warriors in Recovery, a vibrant sobriety support group based in Dakota Tipi First Nation. Our journey is guided by the powerful concoction movement, empowering Native American communities to overcome addiction and recover their physical, emotional and mental well-being, we’re not just overcoming addiction, we’re rebuilding our lives, our families, and our communities.”

Pashe explains what the organization does to help those struggling with addiction.

“Our approach is holistic, embracing the teachings of the 12-step medicine wheel to deepen our spiritual connection, cultivate emotional resilience, clear our minds and nurture our physical health. We share our experiences, we support each other and we celebrate each step toward balance and harmony in our lives. We encourage each other to heal from historical trauma, to reconnect with our ancestors, to revitalize our cultural traditions, and to build stronger families and communities.” .

Shortly, the organization plans to organize a sober dance, with Pashe to tell us.

“It’s October 19th at the Portage Prairie Legion from 7pm to midnight. There will be a light lunch at 10 and there will be live music by Fred Acoby, and DJ Juice will be the DJ.”

Fred Acoby is a musician and singer who performed at the first dance last year, and he shares why he thinks these events are important.

“I had been asked to play. So I came in. I’ve been writing my own material. I play original material; I also play some covers. My original material, as I’ve been on my healing journey. , I’ve more focused on writing about the recovery journey. My lyrics and music tend to reflect on my healing journey and I hope that helps others when they listen to the music,” Acoby continues. “Come and enjoy the music and things like that and realize that you don’t have to drink alcohol or do drugs to have a fun night. And that’s what it’s all about. I’m actually very grateful to be a part of it. .”

Warriors in Recovery meets every Monday and Tuesday at 6pm at Dakota Tipi First Nation and alternates between Long Plain First Nation and Dakota Plains First Nation every Thursday. For more information, Pashe recommends contacting them on their Facebook page.
