Colorado voters have access to abortion

Colorado voters will soon decide whether access to abortion is enshrined in the state constitution after they check yes or no on ballots for Amendment 79.

If approved by at least 55% of voters — a higher threshold to pass because it would change Colorado Constitution — the measure would guarantee access to abortion at the state level, protecting it as a right in Colorado, thus shielding it from lawmakers’ agendas. Here, abortion is currently allowed at any stage of pregnancy.

Amendment 79 would also repeal a 1984 ban prohibiting the use of state and local government funding for abortion services. This means that Medicaid recipients and public employees with government health insurance plans could have the procedures covered in the future.

Colorado is one of the 10 states where voters weigh access to abortion, more who also decide whether or not to enshrine it in their own constitutions. The other nine states include Arizona, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and South Dakota.
