Ukrainian electronic warfare could indirectly affect smartphone watch while repelling drone attacks, General Staff says

There may be interruptions in the operation of smartphone watches due to electronic warfare (EW) used to repel Russian airstrikes, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on November 5.

Users in Ukraine began experiencing more frequent automatic time changes on their smartphones due to the activation of electronic warfare systems during air raid alerts.

Electronic warfare systems try to steer Russian drones in the wrong direction during the attack. This practice is called GPS spoofing or GPS simulation and involves manipulating or deceiving a GPS receiver by transmitting false GPS signals. The receiver then gets an incorrect location.

Since modern smartphones also rely heavily on geolocation services to determine the time zone, this can result in automatic clock switching when GPS spoofing is active.

“It is advisable to turn off the automatic time update mode on your phone and take into account that the accuracy of satellite navigation systems can be disturbed during the announcement of air alerts”, General Staff said.

Russia attacked Ukraine with fish 900 bombsnearly 500 Shahed drones and about 30 missiles over the course of the week, President Volodymyr Zelensky said on the morning of November 3.

Zelensky also said that Russian forces had launched 2,000 Shahed drones in Ukraine in October.

However, Russia continues to evade sanctions by using sanctions evasion networks and fictitious companies. Russia is also aided in evading sanctions by its allies, including China, IRANand north korea.
