Mother outraged by sentence for man who caused her son’s death: ‘He has no remorse’

A mother is outraged after the man who killed her son was sentenced to three years in prison as part of a plea deal.

Devon Pigg was doing a wheelie on his motorcycle in Tulsa in 2022 when he crashed into his friend Shawn Davis, killing him.

After the death, Pigg was arrested again for burglary, and then, while on bail, he was arrested again for leading police on a high-speed chase on a motorcycle.

The victim’s mother says this is not justice. Natasha Bartlett drove 12 hours through the night to be in court Monday morning to be the voice of her son Shawn Davis. Now she returns home angry, sad and disappointed. She says her son’s life is worth more than a few years behind bars.

“Disgust. Three years for a habitual offender? He got three years for killing my son,” Bartlett said.

Investigators say Pigg and Davis were riding motorcycles together in 2022 and Pigg did a wheelie and landed on top of Davis. Davis spent the next 10 days on life support before dying.

“So he basically got a slap on the wrist for taking the life of a Marine. It took the life of my only child,” Bartlett said.

Davis served four years in the Marines, and his mother says he was a great man who loved anything with wheels.

Pigg was originally charged with negligent homicide in 2022 and before being arrested on that warrant, he was arrested on burglary, carjacking and other charges in 2023.

He got out of jail for that case and was arrested again last September for leading Sand Springs police on a high-speed chase on a motorcycle, going more than 100 miles per hour. The pursuit finally ended when Pigg crashed in Tulsa.

“He continued to break the law after taking his friend’s life. He has no remorse. He is a habitual criminal. He will continue to be a criminal,” Bartlett said.

Prosecutors and Pigg’s attorney agreed to a plea deal in which Pigg will receive three years in prison for all of his charges.

The Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office sent us a statement saying:

“Shawn Davis’ death was avoidable. Responsibility for his death will rest on the shoulders of Davis’ friend Devon Pigg for the rest of his life. Likewise, Mr. Davis’ family will never enjoy his company for the rest of their lives.”

On Monday, Devon Pigg pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in prison. Our office has a duty to file charges based on the evidence and information provided to us. In this case, it was initially filed as manslaughter. It was later amended to a charge of criminal homicide. When preparing this case for trial, our Office determined that there were significant evidentiary hurdles in the case. I discussed these issues with the victim’s family prior to the defendant’s plea. No two cases are exactly the same and each case must be based on its strengths and weaknesses. Based on the facts and evidence of the case, our Office made a recommendation that explained the evidentiary issues but still required incarceration.”

“He gets to raise his kids. He gets to see his kids graduate from high school and walk them down the aisle. They get to have a life. They get to visit dad in prison. Guess what I get to do to go to the grave site to visit my child,” Bartlett said.

The judge had some harsh words for Pigg in the courtroom, calling his actions an unimaginable level of stupidity. News On 6 asked Pigg’s attorney for comment on the sentence, but she declined.
