When will we know who the winner of the 2024 presidential election is

Election day is here and by tonight the counting of votes will begin.

Once the counting begins, the question becomes when will we find out who won?

How long does it take for a candidate to concede the presidential race?

Usually the wait is not that long. In 1896, William Jennings Bryant needed two days before awarding the election to President William McKinley. Since then, most candidates have passed either on the same day or the next day, with two exceptions – 2000 and 2020.

In 2000, the presidential race between Vice President Al Gore and Texas Governor George W. Bush came to Florida. The Sunshine State has had voting problems with hanging chads and allegations of misconduct. The case reached the Supreme Court, which ruled in Bush’s favor. In all, it took 36 days for Gore to accept the election.

In 2020, then-Vice President Joe Biden defeated President Donald Trump, but it took four days for a winner to be declared. Trump posted on social media, “He Won,” referring to Biden on Nov. 15, 2020, and said he would not seek another term on Jan. 7, 2021 — a day after a riot on Capitol Hill. Trump never conceded the election.

  • Harris and Trump are tied in the 2024 race for the White House. In an average of national polls by Real Clear Politics, Harris and Trump are tied and in a tie in every battle state.
