Attacker shot three times by ex-girlfriend during Machesney Park home invasion jailed for 15 years

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — A man who was shot three times by his ex-girlfriend in a violent 2022 home invasion in Machesney Park has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

According to Winnebago County State’s Attorney J. Hanley, on September 23, 2022, 68-year-old Randi Steele scaled the fence of the victim’s Machesney Park home and entered through the back door.

Authorities said Steele hunted through the house until he found the woman, who was armed with a gun in her bedroom. When Steele approached, she shot him three times and a gunfight ensued.

Although he was shot, Steele still managed to disarm the woman, who was able to grab another gun and fire at him, but missed. Instead, he used the gun to hit Steele in the head.

The struggle continued until Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies arrived and entered the home to get the victim to safety, Hanley said.

Steele was under a protective order, which required him to stay at least 300 yards from his home and his ex-girlfriend.

Steele was acquitted of aggravated domestic assault causing serious bodily injury and aggravated assault of a person over 60.
