New update on the Jimmy Butler trade to the Golden State Warriors

New update on the Jimmy Butler trade to the Golden State Warriors

It was well documented this summer that the Golden State Warriors attempted to trade for Paul George and Lauri Markkanen. This attempt to land Steph Curry on an established co-star failed because Golden State was unwilling to deal Jonathan Kuminga or Brandin Podziemski.

Sam Amick of The Athletic mentioned on The TK issue during the offseason that Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler is a player the Warriors have shown interest in.

“A couple of guys that come to mind, Jimmy Butler will be a free agent next summer,” Amick said in September. “We didn’t do overtime. The Warriors, as you know, are interested there and I think they probably made a few calls over the summer.”

Since then, Amick has provided another update on the Butler-Warriors dynamic in a article for The Athletic.

Via Amick: “Still, while rival executives believe the Warriors are more willing than ever to include Kuminga in a significant trade, the fact remains that they are setting their sights very high on potential targets. A name to monitor is Jimmy. Butler, the 35-year-old Miami Heat star who league sources say drew interest from the Warriors during the offseason and did not settle for an extension, will be an unrestricted free agent next summer.

Golden State’s reluctance to deal with Kuminga over the summer was one of the biggest reasons they fell short in their pursuit of an established star. After failing to extend the 22-year-old forward’s contract, it appears the Warriors are more open to trading him.

As Amick reported, the Warriors have already shown interest in Butler. The difference now is that they might be willing to deal Kuminga to acquire a player of Butler’s caliber.
