Candidates gather in Bell County before Election Day, encouraging voters to go and vote

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) – With just five days left until Election Day, candidates are now making one last push in Central Texas to rally support.

This morning Jennifer Lee, who is the Democratic candidate for Texas House District 55, held a final rally in Harker Heights with Beto O’Rourke.

Texas Senator and Republican candidate Ted Cruz was in Killeen today for his own rally at Jokers Icehouse…both encouraging Bell County voters to get out to the polls.

Lee, who is running against Hillary Hickland, used his rally in Harker Heights to talk about the importance of this election and to get his fellow Democrats to vote.

“It’s to encourage Democrats that we’re here, we’re trying, we’ve got fantastic candidates, please come out for us because we’re going to come out for you,” Lee said.

Beto O’Rourke, a former U.S. representative, made the trip to support Lee and also go door-to-door with her as she asked people to vote.

“Knowing that we’ve been there, knowing that he cares, knowing that we’re trying to get you out the vote,” Lee said, “your vote absolutely matters and that’s why it’s so important that everyone shows up.”

Both Lee and Cruz were joined by other local candidates on the Bell County ballot today. Lee’s opponent, Hillary Hickland, rallied with Sen. Ted Cruz in Killeen.

“We have to make sure we have the right people in the right places for the right reasons,” Hickland said.

Cruz, who is running against Colin Allred for his current US Senate seat, is currently on a bus tour of the state … making a quick stop in Killeen.

“We just had an incredible rally here in Killeen … tremendous enthusiasm, energy,” Cruz said, “Texans who are really concerned about the direction of our country.”

During his rally, he talked about a number of issues on the ballot here in Texas, reminding people what they’re fighting for and telling them to get out and vote.

“If you want to keep Texas safe, if you want to keep Texas Texas … there’s a clear choice in this race, and I’m asking for your vote,” Cruz said.

But regardless of party, one thing everyone agreed on at these rallies is that our future is at stake.

“Given everything that’s on the line, we want everyone … Republican, Democrat or independent … to be able to vote, have that vote count and make sure their voice is heard,” O’Rourke said.

Early voting ends tomorrow, so if you haven’t voted yet, be sure to check back to see when or where you can vote in your county.
