LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – The 1.5-mile Leighton Avenue improvement project is nearing completion and is expected to reopen to traffic early next week, according to the City of Lincoln.

The project in the University Place neighborhood cost nearly $2.6 million and is one of eight Lincoln on the Move projects this year. In total, almost 18 million dollars were invested in 27 miles of streets in the city.

Improvements to Leighton Avenue between North 48th and North 70th streets include a mill and overlay of the existing surface and base repairs where necessary, utility adjustments, entrance and curb repairs or replacement, and installation of a rectangular rapid flashing beacon.

The city used highway appropriation funds for additional work on existing ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

“Through our community’s investment in Lincoln on the Move, we are proud to deliver street improvements — like this project that helps students travel safely to and from Lincoln Northeast High School, connecting neighbors to nearby amenities, shopping and improving mobility in northeast Lincoln. ” said Mayor Gaylor Baird.

Since its inception, it has added nearly $78 million to the city’s overall street investments, resulting in 52 projects with more than 162 miles of new and resurfaced streets.

“The completed work on Leighton Street shows how these investments increase mobility, safety and access for all our residents, while creating the infrastructure support to help businesses thrive and grow our local economy,” said the City Council President , Sandra Washington.
