The man admits to shooting 2 people and setting the house on fire

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (LEX 18) — Elizabethtown police report a man admitted to shooting two people and then setting a house on fire Wednesday.

According to police, the Elizabethtown Fire Department responded to a call for a structure fire on Henon Lane and when police arrived on scene they found two men dead from gunshot wounds.

Investigators at the scene report that the fire was determined to have been started “intentionally.”

Police say witnesses reportedly saw a gold pickup truck leaving the scene, which officers later found at a local motel.

According to police, surveillance video showed 45-year-old Dustin Caudill “getting out of the truck and throwing a handgun.”

Police say that after a thorough investigation, they found “victims’ personal belongings in Caudill’s motel room” and that he also discharged a firearm at a third victim.

In an interview, police say Caudill confessed to the crime, admitting he “shot the victims and intentionally set fire to the home” and “stole the victims’ wallets and threw them in a trash can at the gas station.”

Caudill is booked into the Hardin County Detention Center and faces the following charges:

  • first degree arson
  • two counts of murder
  • manipulation of physical evidence
  • possession of a handgun by a convicted felon
  • first degree robbery
  • first degree endangerment
