2024 Election Updates: Michelle Obama, Harris Raise Michigan Crowd

Former first lady Michelle Obama took the stage in Kalamazoo, Michigan to a standing ovation before introducing the vice president.

Obama, at her first campaign appearance at the DNC, spoke of Harris’ mature temperament and history of work for all Americans.

“Michigan, don’t buy into the lie that we don’t understand who Kamala is or what she stands for,” she said.

“Take it from me, I know good people,” Obama said.

She asked “why the hell is this race even close” but claimed Kamala has shown she’s up for the job.

“The real question is, are we ready for this moment?” Obama said.

The former first lady said she was angered by Donald Trump’s indifference to his history of division, bias and lack of concern for democracy.

“Some people think it’s funny. That’s how he got elected the first time. People gave him a pass and rolled the dice, betting it couldn’t be that bad,” she said.

“Nothing this man says or does is funny in any way,” Obama later added.

The former first lady addressed the men in the crowd as she spoke about the stakes for women’s health and reproductive rights if Trump wins.

She spoke about the loss many women have seen over the past three years by losing reproductive care following the Dobbs decision and the dangers if Trump pushes for more restrictions.

“Your girlfriend could be the one in legal jeopardy if she needs a pill from out of state or abroad, or if she has to travel across state lines because the clinic has closed. Your wife or mother may be at higher risk. of dying from undiagnosed cervical cancer because they don’t have access to regular gynecological care, your daughter might be the one terrified to call the doctor if she bleeds during an unexpected pregnancy.

“So guys, before you vote, ask yourself, what part of history do you want to be on?” Obama later added.
