The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has distributed grants to 1,200 indigent and vulnerable people in his Bende Federal Constituency in Abia State.

The Vice President’s generous gesture, tagged ‘Family Support Grant for Rural Dwellers’, is a cash grant meant to alleviate the suffering of vulnerable groups in the 13 wards in the constituency.

Addressing newsmen on the distribution of the grants, Mr. Emma Trumps Eke, Managing Director of the Benjamin Kalu Foundation, said the Vice President’s generosity is scheduled to unfold monthly and in phases.

Speaking on the selection process, Eke said 80 persons were selected from each federal ward of the constituency.

Also speaking, the leading stateswoman of the Benjamin Kalu Foundation, Lady Philomena Ikwuegu, told newsmen that the kind gesture means a lot to the beneficiaries, especially in these trying times.

“One of them was so excited because he didn’t get something like this in these hard times,” Philomena said.

The beneficiaries expressed their deep gratitude to the Vice President for his benevolence.

One of the beneficiaries, Chief Ihendu John Ogba said; “I want to thank him, let him continue, by the grace of God, he will be the senator of this senatorial zone next time. One good twist deserves another.”

Another beneficiary, Mrs. Comfort Chukwu thanked the Vice President, saying she plans to use her quota to invest in her farmland for increased cultivation.

Mrs Mba Ijeoma Precious, a petty trader in Apanu Item, expressed her joy after receiving her quota and said it would boost her petty trading.

“I am very pleased to receive this amount of money, as a small trader I will use this money to support my business. This money is actually given regardless of your political affiliation. May God bless Honorable Benjamin Kalu and give him strength to do more,” she said.
