NEW DELHI: Former captain of Team India MS Dhoni recently shared dramatic memories from India T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, recalling a behind-the-scenes look at the emotions he experienced while watching the final at home.
“Hum log ghar pe the (I was at home). We were watching with some of the friends who came,” Dhoni said at a recent event, recounting how the twists and turns of the game left everyone in doubt till the end.
As the second innings unfolded, most of Dhoni’s friends gave up and left. “They said, ‘Arey khatam ho gaya, chalo na hamare saath (it’s over; come with us).’ But I said: “In cicadauntil it’s over, it’s not over.'”
Even Dhoni admitted he was not fully confident, but held to the belief that the opposition’s batting depth was vulnerable to pressure. “When the stakes are high, the games are high, you have a chance and you want to make the most of it,” he explained.
India’s victory, secured at the Kensington Oval in Barbados against South Africa, marked the end of a 17-year wait for their second T20 World Cup title.

Dhoni praised the team’s relentless attitude in the clutch moments. “Huge congratulations to the guys who were on the pitch because that’s the kind of energy, motivation and belief that’s needed.”
The final saw India pull off an improbable comeback against a formidable South African line-up.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma played pivotal roles in the win, both veterans announced their retirement from T20Is after the match.
Hardik Pandyahis bowling brilliance and Jasprit BumrahHis pinpoint accuracy sealed the win in seven runs, while Suryakumar YadavHis boundary line catch became a highlight.
Reflecting on the win, Dhoni summed up India’s never-give-up attitude: “It doesn’t matter what the result is, but until they win and say they’ve won the game, we have to hang on. push; and that was the attitude.”
With this win, India ended their T20 World Cup drought, leaving fans euphoric and giving Rohit and Kohli a perfect farewell in the shortest format of the game.
