Cheryl Burke says Matthew Lawrence felt “emasculated” by financial success

Cheryl Burke opens up about what she thinks went wrong in her marriage Matthew Lawrence.

In the Wednesday, October 23 episode of I do, part 2 podcast, Burke — who was married to Lawrence, 44, nearly three years prior filing for divorce in February 2022 — said she believes their split stemmed from “bad timing” in their personal and professional lives.

The Dancing with the stars alum, 40, recalled how they first met around 2006 when the actor’s older brother, Joeywas a contestant on season 3 of the reality show. She mentioned that at the time, she was “very new” to the entertainment industry and that he was already in it since childhood.

“I was just at the peak of success dancing with the stars” Burke said. “So we were on tour. We were doing two seasons a year, two tournaments a year. So it was like I was working around the clock, I barely had a day off.”

While they called things off a year after dating, they later reconnected in 2017 and married — even though Burke said Lawrence wasn’t working “as much” at the time.

“I kind of knew what I was getting myself into. That’s just my personality. I’m never going to make money. That comes from my mom, who’s a rags-to-riches story. I saw her in the hustle and I was raised . with her hustle, that’s what I’m after all,” Burke said. “I’m actually proud of that. There’s no shame in that, that’s for sure.”

The Sex, Lies and Spray Tans The podcast host said she was fully aware of what she was “getting into financially” and believes it “had an impact” on Lawrence.

“I won’t speak for him,” she said. “I’m not here to foul mouth and whatever. But I think there’s this gender role where a man can feel a bit emasculated when he’s not making the majority of the money, and I think that could be affected. .”

In a March 2023 conversation with Entertainment tonightTHE Boy meets world alum said that their divorce was “testing”.. “I’ve learned so much about myself and I’m so grateful and blessed for the opportunity to grow and that came out of it,” he said at the time.

Since their breakup, Lawrence has found love Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. The two of them went public with their romance in January 2023after getting romantically involved just before Thanksgiving Day 2022.

Burke confirmed on I do, part 2 podcast that she stays single.

“As of today, I’ve been single and celibate for the past three years and I’ve definitely found strength in that,” she said.
