The thief stole the car several times and took it to the owner’s house

STAFFORD, Va. (WUSA) – Residents in Stafford County, Virginia are calling this a strange crime.

A suspected thief accused of stealing a man’s car and returning it multiple times has finally been arrested.

“Crazy. I mean, there’s no other way to explain it,” owner David Basye said.

Basye may laugh about it now, but the last few weeks haven’t just been crazy; they were confusing and strange at the same time.

“It’s crazy to finally find out that it was being stolen every night without my knowledge,” Basye said.

Basye is talking about someone stealing his Honda Insight from the parking lot of his Stafford townhouse.

But instead of leaving the car at another location or stealing something from inside, the sheriff’s office said the thief would return the car several times.

It happened for the first time on October 6.

Basye admitted to leaving the car unlocked with a slightly broken spare key in a compartment.

“They could have at least put gas in it,” Basye joked.

However, the next morning he saw the car returning.

Basye installed a trail camera that day, but discovered the car was stolen again the next night.

About an hour later, Basye says the thief returned the car again.

“As I was sitting in my living room, I saw him back and continued chasing him down the road,” Basye said. “I just screamed and told him to come here and he ran away.”

Basye eventually installed security cameras in his own home.

A suspected thief accused of repeatedly stealing a car and returning it has finally been arrested.

He thought it was over, but last week the camera recorded his vehicle back on the road.

This time, Stafford County deputies stood up and caught the driver protesting in the neighborhood.

Them 22 year old arrested G’avontai Mul-Key of Stafford is also accused of leaving a trail of fentanyl pills.

“They were using it recreationally, going wherever they wanted and coming back, and I didn’t know about it,” Basye said.

Even though it’s strange, other neighbors say it’s still scary.

One resident has a warning for anyone trying to pull the same trick.

“There’s a lot of guns around here, so if you want to crawl, go ahead,” the neighbor said.

The sheriff’s office said the main suspect also did not have a driver’s license. Mul-Key is currently facing multiple charges, including unauthorized use of a vehicle, obstruction of justice, and grand theft.
