If you only have one day to visit this small Maine town, here’s everything you can’t miss

You probably came to Maine for a number of reasons. Chief among them are lobster, seafood and… more lobster. The good news? You’ll find plenty of this all over the state! The better news? You’ll also get a side order of some serious New England vibes when you find it. While there are plenty of places in Maine that look as scenic as a movie set, you may have found one of the best New England towns in Maine. Welcome to Wiscasset!

This lovely town has officially been recognized as “the prettiest village in Maine.”

other

Overlooking the Sheepscot River, Wiscasset comes with the kind of charm that can only be found in Maine’s quintessential small town.

other

More precisely, a town with less than 4,000 inhabitants at the last census.

A day trip at any time of the year should start with a trip through the city center.

other

Main Street is exactly what you would imagine in New England. Wonderful locally owned shops line the street, which is also dotted with restaurants, cafes and bars.

Main Street leads to the Sheepscot River and the view might top any Main Street view in the state!

other

The next place you’ll want to stop is Red’s Eats.

other

Home to one of the best lobster spots in Maine, Red’s Eats almost always has a line in the summer, so be sure to stop by earlier in the day.

other

Line too long? Head to Sprague’s Lobster at the end of Main Street for another incredible lobster roll.

other

Wiscasset is also home to views that scream New England.

other

Whether you’re simply strolling downtown in nice weather…

other

…or look for the Maine fog that comes on cloudy days.

other

Wiscasset is also home to some surprising attractions.

The town is also rumored to be the site of Marie Antoinette’s escape home before her execution during the French Revolution. The captain of the local ship, Stephen Clough, went to France to rescue his daughter who, coincidentally, was in the same prison. Clough’s wife even prepared her home for the queen. Legend has it that she almost escaped but refused to leave without her son. The house can be seen across the river at Castle Tucker.

Built in 1807, Castle Tucker is one of the oldest in Maine.

other

It now operates as a museum, allowing visitors to see how its last Victorian residents would have lived.

And, right across from Tucker Castle, it’s said to be the location of Marie Antoinette’s escape home before her execution in France.

There is also a wonderful artist vibe throughout the city.

other

It is peaceful and full of well-tended trees, plants and flowers.

other

Make it an overnight trip by booking into the Snow Squall B&B.

other

Snow Squall is located close to downtown as well as within walking distance of the water. And they offer yoga on site.

Most importantly, just have fun and enjoy all the New England you can here in Wiscasset!
