The report reveals that Barcelona are still paying the outstanding salaries of three club legends

Some of the most important FC Barcelona legends of the last decade are currently playing in the USA. Three of these players, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are associated with the same club, Inter Miami.

Lionel Messi joined the American side in 2023, after spending two seasons with French side Paris Saint Germain following his departure from FC Barcelona in 2021. The other two players, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba left the Catalan club in 2023 and joined Inter Miami. in the same year.

However, according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona are still paying these three players, even though they left the club several years ago. These payments are being made as the trio had their salaries deferred in the 2020-21 financial year when the club faced perhaps its toughest year financially due to the pandemic.

This will be the last season in which Barcelona will have to make these payments. Furthermore, while these payments continue to be a burden on the club’s coffers, they will not affect the club’s financial statements as they were accounted for in the books for the 2020-21 financial year.

That year, the club incurred losses to the tune of €481 million, and this deficit was one of the reasons that led to the FFP issues that the Blaugranas are still struggling with, as they are still not back in the 1: 1.

This situation was also responsible for the departure of Lionel Messi from the club, since he left the following year because the Catalans could not register him in the League.

As things stand, the highest officials of the Barcelona club have made it clear that they are quite close to returning to 1:1. Hopefully that’s the case and the club can make the desired moves in the upcoming summer transfer window.
