Rochester Hills man killed by men posing as utility workers, sheriff says

Rochester Hills – Two men posing as DTE Energy workers repairing a gas leak killed a man in his Rochester Hills home Friday, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said.

The suspects originally arrived at the home in the 3700 block of Newcastle Drive around 9-10 Thursday night but were denied entry, Bouchard said at a news conference Friday at afternoon outside the house. They returned Friday morning and were allowed inside, the sheriff said.

Once inside, the suspects, along with a male resident of the home, went into the basement, authorities said. A short time later, the suspects went back up the stairs and used duct tape to restrain the man’s wife.

After the suspects fled, the woman was able to free herself enough to call 911, Bouchard said. Officers responded shortly after 11 a.m. and located the man’s body in the basement.

The manner of her death is still under investigation, Bouchard said, and the woman remains hospitalized.

Authorities described the suspects as a stocky Hispanic man and a thin black man. They were driving a truck with some kind of DTE ID, possibly a sticker, Bouchard said.
