The French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe is starting to restore power after a strike caused a blackout

MEXICO CITY (AP) – The government of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe said power was slowly being restored Saturday morning, a day after a workers’ strike left its 370,000 residents in the dark for nearly 24 hours.

Despite power being restored, the government continued to urge caution for residents on Saturday, with many turning to generators for electricity.

“Position the generator in a well-ventilated area, do not place indoors or in a closed space, and do not fuel when the engine is hot,” the government said on social media platform X.

Guadeloupe’s government said Friday that workers raided the control room of the island’s only power plant, prompting police to rush to the scene to secure it.

The power outage left some households without water, and mobile phone service was severely affected. Authorities have not said when everything will return to normal.

Union workers have been on strike for nearly two months over wages and other issues. The union did not respond to a request for comment.
