Sumner pleads not guilty

Nov. 2 — JEFFERSON — Nathan Sumner pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder at an arraignment in Ashtabula County Common Pleas Court Friday.

Magistrate Joseph Macejko continued Sumner’s bond at $500,000 cash or surety.

If released on bail, Sumner must have no contact with the family of the victim, Heather Harris. He was ordered to undergo a mental health evaluation.

He was originally charged with murder, but was charged with aggravated murder, an unclassified felony.

Judge David Schroeder was assigned to the case.

Sumner was arrested and charged on September 25.

Conneaut Police Chief Michael Colby said in a news release Sumner walked into the police station around 12:45 a.m. and confessed to killing his girlfriend, Harris.

Harris’ body was found by first responders at the home where they both lived.
