Here are the best ways to manage unwanted behavior in cats, according to a behaviorist

What can we do when our cats do not behave as we would like?

Knowing how to manage unwanted behavior in our cats can be tricky, in part simply because they are cats; often, they seem to rule or think they do! That said, there are things we can do, both to address the behavior and to make sure our kitties are healthy and happy too. Of course, some of the best cat treats it will help!

Registered Cat Behavior Consultant Molly Kelsey, o The cat advisorhas offered some advice in a new Instagram post, and it’s a big help for the cat parents among us!

“Punishment such as spraying, clapping, or hitting is not only ineffective as a training tool, but is known to cause a lot of unnecessary fear, anxiety, and stress in our feline friends,” Kelsey begins by explaining. “Their trust in the person responsible will diminish and could be difficult to rebuild. Unwanted behavior may even increase, or new ones may develop as a result.”

These behavior management methods are outdated, and while you might not dream of punishing your cat this way, it’s worth noting, if only to compare them to Kelsey’s alternatives. (Don’t miss these seven common cat behavior problems solvedtoo!)

First, she says it’s important to take your cat to the vet if it’s suddenly started showing unwanted behaviors, to rule out injury or illness, which can change a cat’s behavior overnight.

It’s also a good idea to make sure your cat has adequate outlets for normal cat behavior, such as spaces to climb, rest and watch in their favorite areas; cats often like to be up high, while some love to explore a cat tree. Instead, it pays to make non-cat areas boring and unattractive. If you don’t want your cat anywhere, but you’ve left food scraps in the area, there might be too much temptation!

She continues, “Reinforce desired behaviors frequently… let them know they’re doing something right and reward them.” Even sitting quietly on the couch is a desired behavior if you allow your cat to approach the furniture, so use some treats and praise!

Finally, remember to teach your cat simple cues to control its movements; Kelsey recommends cues like “come,” “turn,” and “sit.” “This will make it easier to direct them to an appropriate area if necessary,” he explains.
