Hotel Evacuated | News, Sports, Employment

CELORON – One person has been hospitalized and the Celoron Harbor Hotel was briefly evacuated after a chemical leak Monday.

The Celoron Volunteer Fire Department responded to the Harbor Hotel for an employee reporting difficulty breathing around 8:30 a.m. Monday. Upon arrival at 10 Dunham Ave., fire department officials treated and transported the distressed employee to the emergency room and began operations to ventilate and isolate the chemicals the employee was using at the time of the emergency

“The employee mixed bleach with an unknown acid-type material,” said Tim Nelson, second deputy chief of the Celon Volunteer Fire Department. “They took him to the hospital and I called for additional support units because I could barely get into the room the employee was working in. The room he (the employee) was in is a vent for the building.I called additional units for support because I smelled the chemical mixture that was cleaned up on the 4th floor.The entire building has been evacuated, the chemical mixture is in the parking lot and we are ventilating and ventilating the whole building.”

Responding fire departments included the Village of Lakewood Fire Department; Firefighters of Busti; County emergency, fire and ambulance units along with hazmat support.

Officials at the Harbor Hotel were not available for comment and a message was left with a hotel employee for the hotel’s general manager.

Several area fire departments responded to a call to the Harbor Hotel, 10 Dunham Ave, Celoron for a reported chemical leak that hospitalized an employee and resulted in the hotel being evacuated so it could be properly ventilated . Around 11:49 a.m., firefighters cleared the site to be reoccupied.

According to thechautauquaharborhotel.com, the hotel has 135 luxury guest rooms and suites along the Pier Ballroom and Conference Center, which seats 450 people.
