27-year-old accused of shooting girlfriend after she allegedly hit him with a stick

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – A man is behind bars for fatally shooting his girlfriend at a Memphis senior living complex, according to the Memphis Police Department.

Marquez Boyd, 27, is charged with second-degree murder and reckless endangerment.

On Friday morning, Memphis police were called to Memphis Towers, a senior living complex located off Court Avenue in the Medical District.

At one of the apartments, officers encountered Boyd, who told police he shot his girlfriend in self-defense.

MPD says Boyd is paralyzed from the waist down.

Officers entered the apartment bedroom to find the victim, identified only as Jane Doe in the arrest affidavit, on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Boyd told investigators he was arguing with his girlfriend when she hit him with a cane. Boyd claims he then grabbed a knife and pulled her hair.

He says he pulled a gun from under the mattress and then shot her. Boyd later admitted to hitting the victim in the face with the gun.

Officers said they found the woman unarmed and partially under the bed.

One of the bullets went through the wall into the apartment next door. The neighbor told police she heard a loud fight, five gunshots and then silence.

The stray bullet hit the neighbor’s bedroom closet.

Police noted that Boyd was uninjured when he was taken into custody.

He is being held in the Shelby County Jail on $100,000 bond and is due in court Tuesday morning.
