The driver hits a homeless man and leaves him on Griffin Street, officers say

A convenience store surveillance camera captured the shocking moment a hit-and-run driver hit a homeless man near the intersection of North Hill Street and West Broad Street in Griffin Monday morning.

In the video, the victim can be seen walking down the street when he trips and falls, dropping his belongings. While he is collecting them, the truck proceeds to run him over.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation. Officers returned to the scene Monday afternoon to collect additional evidence.

Georgia state troopers say a truck driver hit a homeless man who had fallen in the street.

A friend of the victim spoke to FOX 5 Atlanta.

“He’s a wonderful person, he’ll give you the shirt off his back, he’ll help anybody,” Patricia Hamilton told FOX 5’s Deidra Dukes. Hamilton was in the area when he was hit.

“I saw the ambulance and they were loading him on a stretcher and everything,” he said. “It scared me to death. I thought I was dead.”

A friend of the victim spoke to FOX 5 Atlanta after the incident.

Doctors took the man to an area hospital.

Hamilton wondered how such a thing could happen.

“I don’t know who (or) what was wrong with them, because anybody in their right mind should at least slow down or something,” Hamilton said. “I never heard the car screech or anything, you know, I guess they were just half asleep, because it was very early in the morning, and they beat it and beat it up there, you know.”

The victim suffered significant injuries. Anyone with information about the case can contact the Georgia State Patrol.
